780 people died in the Hubei region alone, from which the infection started, and 812 throughout China
The number of people who died from the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV) exceeded the number of SARS deaths between 2002 and 2003: in the Hubei region alone, where the infection spread, 780 people died, six more than those who died from SARS in more than twenty countries around the world. In total, 813 people died from the new coronavirus, of which only one died outside of China (in the Philippines).
As far as the infected people are concerned, there are now more than 37,000 cases, the vast majority of which are still in China. On Saturday, the head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that in the last five days there had been a stabilization in the number of newly infected: it is still early to tell if it will continue, but according to Ghebreyesus it may be an opportunity to work better on containing the spread of the virus.
In Hong Kong the 3,600 people who had been in quarantine on board the cruise ship World Dream for five days have been landed: all 1,800 crew members, who were feared to have contracted the coronavirus during a previous voyage, tested negative. Another cruise ship on which infected people were present is still in quarantine near Yokohama, Japan.
There are at least 314 people infected outside China, in 24 different countries, as well as in Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. The country with the highest number of infections in Japan (96), followed by Singapore (40) and Thailand (32). In the United States, 12 cases have been confirmed. At the same time, in Europe there are infections in Germany (14), France (11), Italy, United Kingdom (3), Spain (2), Belgium, Sweden and Finland (1): here is an updated list with all the cases of contagion country by country.
The three cases in Italy are those of two Chinese tourists, husband and wife, in intensive care and always with confidential prognosis but in stable conditions, and that of a 29-year-old computer scientist from Luzzara (province of Reggio Emilia) who lives in California and had been to China to see his Chinese girlfriend: his condition is good, he has mild symptoms. All three are hospitalized at the National Institute of Infectious Diseases Lazzaro Spallanzani in Rome.
A woman among the people isolated at the military citadel of Cecchignola after returning from China had been taken to the Spallanzani Institute because she had conjunctivitis, one of the symptoms of the new coronavirus. Still, last night the doctors reported that she tested negative for the virus. Also last night, as a precaution, two children aged 4 and 8 (accompanied by a parent) were taken to the Institute, who was at Cecchignola. They had a slight fever, but neither of them tested positive for the virus. They have now been returned to the Cecchignola.
In the meantime, eight Italians who were in Wuhan, the city in the Hubei region from where the new coronavirus spread, have returned to Italy on a military flight; they landed at Pratica di Mare and will be in quarantine at the Celio military hospital in Rome. The 17-year-old Italian who had already been detained in Wuhan because he had a fever did not even leave on this flight, because his temperature had risen again, but he is fine.
Yesterday in France, Health Minister Agnès Buzyn reported five new cases (a total of 11 in the country) involving British citizens now hospitalized in isolation. These five people, including a 9-year-old child, were staying in a Haute-Savoie ski resort near Mont Blanc, all staying in the same chalet: they were probably infected by another British citizen who had been there after a trip to Singapore and who is now in the UK. Six other people who have stayed in the chalet are currently under observation. However, the condition of the six people in the cottage is not severe.
