A complaint that Prince Harry of England had made against the British tabloid Daily Mail was rejected by the Independent Press Standards Organisation, which monitors the British press. The complaint concerned an article that last April had described as “sedated and tied” an elephant in a photo he had published on Instagram. The British monarchy had published the photo to celebrate Earth Day: it was taken in 2016, while Harry was in Malawi visiting a nature park, and showed a ranger at close range in front of an elephant.
The Mail on Sunday, the Sunday edition of the Daily Mail, had written that the elephant had been sedated and that the cut photo hid the fact that it was tied by its hind legs. Harry had filed a complaint against the tabloid, saying that the full version of the photo, along with others, had been online on the monarchy’s website since 2016 and there was no intention of hiding the fact that the elephant was sedated and tied, which was normal practice for the transfer operation it was undergoing at the time. However, the Independent Press Standards Organisation rejected the Prince’s complaint, stating that the Daily Mail had not violated any rules.
