Dr. Laurie was born in Buffalo, New York, and enjoyed a great childhood. She desired to be an actress, but her mother convinced her to get a degree to support herself.
Dr. Laurie earned her degree in Psychology, and today decades later, she proudly admits that it was the best decision of her life.
Dr. Laurie extends her services and wisdom to laypeople, and her extensive academic background adds value to her work. Her life’s work is a unique combination of activities that involve teaching university undergraduates, ‘The Psychology of Human Sexuality,’ providing psychotherapy and consulting services, speaking and writing to raise awareness on topics she resonates with, like women empowerment and deconstructing sexual stigmatization of women.
Dr. Laurie is known as the foremost authority in the country on the orgasm gap. Her best-selling book release, Becoming Cliterate: Why Orgasm Equality Matters and How to Get It, has helped raise awareness around the matter.
Laurie accepts that while successes and accomplishments as a psychologist boosted her during her career, failures drove her to push harder. While sharing her moments of setbacks, she said, “ I had to send my first book proposal out to TONS of agents/editors before getting one, and the agent I found had an initial hard time placing it. I also wrote a few children’s books when I was trying to find my way into writing for the public, but all were rejected!”
Furthermore, feminist professor Dr. Laurie ventured into the arena of social media influencing to spread sex-positive information. Despite facing backlash and hate from a few followers, she has continued to grow stronger and ignore the bullies. She calls herself The Sex Granny and inspires her followers through educational content with a dash of humor.
Dr. Laurie’s transformation from a full-time academic and psychotherapist to a public speaker and social media influencer is genuinely inspiring. It shows how one person can impact in so many different ways.
