After more than three years, the Maldives have returned to the Commonwealth, the organization of states united (with a couple of exceptions) by having been part of the British Empire in the past. The Maldives – where more than 300,000 people live – had left the Commonwealth in 2016, following a series of criticisms for too much corruption and human rights violations while former President Abdulla Yameen was in government. The new entry into the Commonwealth is therefore a sign of the positive policies implemented by the new President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, who defeated Yameen in the 2018 elections.
