The organization: “The epidemic makes it impossible”, many technology bigwigs had given up the event
The Mobile World Congress, the most important mobile fair scheduled at the end of February in Barcelona, will not be held because of the coronavirus. This was decided by the Gsma, the world association of telecommunications operators that organizes the event, at the end of a long meeting. The CEO of the association John Hoffman, reports Bloomberg, explained that the epidemic has made it “impossible” to set up the event.
Vodafone and Nokia (the part that deals with tlc networks) had also cancelled their participation in the Mwc because of the epidemic. The decision, the second company explains in a note, was taken “after a full risk assessment of a rapidly changing situation” and to “safeguard the health and well-being of employees and others, while acknowledging responsibility to the industry and customers”. Among the excellent defections were Ericsson, Lg, Amazon, Nvidia, Facebook and Hmd Global, manufacturer of Nokia-branded phones, other than the one dealing only with tlc networks.
